3 of 8 Theme 2: Ensemble Directors presented by Caron Daley
Caron Daley’s presentation highlights the crucial, yet often overlooked, role of ensemble directors in shaping both the health risks and the protective environment of music school ensembles. Directors wield immense influence through repertoire selection, rehearsal design, leadership style, and communication. Yet most receive little or no training on occupational health and injury prevention, even as ensemble participation exposes students to high rates of musculoskeletal injury, vocal strain, and hearing risk, as well as psychological pressures. Daley calls for integrating health, harm prevention, and collaborative leadership into conductor education and ensemble practice, making safety, wellness, and inclusion central to ensemble culture.
